Last weekend the annual Tiger Day Celebration came to the streets of Terney, a town in northern Primorye - home of the Sikhote-Alin Biosphere Nature Reserve and WCS Sikhote-Alin Research Center. According to most participants and organizers, this year’s Tiger Day Celebration was a great success. Despite weather forecasts promising heavy showers, everyone (both participants and organizers) wanted the holiday so badly that nature decided to take pity on us and produced wonderful warm weather.

Public support is an integral component of any conservation project, even if it is the most difficult to achieve. Usually, decisions based on scientific research will find both support and resistance. So how does one find a balance between the public and the wild? This very question was tackled in a 5-day workshop entitled “Human dimension in wildlife: stakeholder engagement.” The course was held at The Wildlife Conservation Society’s (WCS) Sikhote-Alin research center in the town of Terney, Primorsky Krai. Cornell University associate professor Dr. Heidi Kretser, who has worked for WCS for over 20 years, led the course, introducing a topic relatively new to Russian science.

Amur (or long-tailed) goral - one of the rarest mountain ungulates - was captured by camera trap in the Sikhote-Alin Biosphere Nature Reserve. This secretive species of goral, endangered within Russia and listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN, is found only in northeast Asia including the southern Russian Far East, the Korean peninsula, and northeastern China. Sikhote-Alin Nature Reserve hosts about 180 individual animals - the largest single population of goral in Russia.

Our Sikhote-Alin Research Center hosted one more 5-day workshop. This time we taught population ecology, namely methods to estimate population abundance and then analyze these data. 'How many individuals are out there?' That is a question which is often asked by researchers and public. However, it is a very challenging task to obtain realistic estimates of population density. We discussed transect and plot surveys, methods of capture-recapture, spatially-explicit methods, and survey of animals when individuals are not recognized. For rare and elusive species, occupancy analysis was introduced.

On April 6-9 WCS Russia held a workshop on spatially-explicit capture-recapture (SECR) based on Sikhote Alin Research Center. This method uses camera trap data to estimate population density of individually recognizable animals, for example, tigers and leopards. Pictures of the same animals serve as 'recaptures'. Geographic coordinates of camera traps allow to conduct spatial analysis and calculate home range size and probability of recapture, which in turn is used to estimate density and abundance of the population.

As part of a small carnivore project at Sikhote-Alin Biosphere Zapovednik, specialists of ANO WCS in cooperation with SABZ are monitoring activities around den sites to understand population dynamics of badgers. To our surprise, this video (below) captured a young lynx practicing his hunting skills on an unsuspecting badger. Lucky for the badger, this lynx was not prepared to exploit this opportunity.

Camera traps have become a useful and common tool used by biologists to study wildlife. In fact, it has become one of the most commonly used ways to observe and monitor elusive species of wildlife. But with this explosive use of camera traps to study wildlife, a new problem has arrived - what to do with all those photographs, and how to manage the huge volume of information in them. From March 13-15 ANO WCS was holding a training seminar for its own staff and interested parties (Zavpovednoe Primamur) to learn how to use the program, called "CPW Photo Warehouse", specifically designed for cameratrap images database management.

On December 15, 2017, WCS organized a staff training session on first aid in Terney at the Sikhote-Alin Research Center (SARC).Working in the field, especially with wild animals, poses a large number of health risks and potential dangers. Being prepared to deal with such situations can be critical when in the field. Therefore, being able to competently provide first aid to an injured colleague is a vital skill and mandatory requirement for employees of WCS Russia.

A hands-on workshop, the first of its kind in the Russian Far East devoted to unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs or drones), was held in the Land of the Leopard National Park last week. Over 20 specialists from various national parks and nature reserves of the southern Russian Far East gathered to participate in the training session organized by the Phoenix Fund and Wildlife Conservation Society, with funding from the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW). The workshop let forest guardians deepen their knowledge, get familiar with new unmanned systems technologies, and improve their skills at operating UAVs.

North of Ternei, in the province of Primorye where I conduct most of my research, there are no hotels and no restaurants. There are barely even people. There are only a half-dozen small settlements, logging towns or subsistence villages that are remote islands of humanity scattered broadly across a rolling sea of mountain and forest. When I travel to this wilderness it’s usually in a huge truck that doubles as a cabin, a hulking diesel we pack tightly with food and other supplies and assume it’s enough to sustain us. Read more here.

I feel a kinship with Vladimir Arsenyev, the Russian topographer who explored Primorye a hundred years ago. We both know the secret places of these forests: the rivers where salmon spawn and the rocky outcroppings where tigers den. Arsenyev left an indelible mark not just on me, but on people across the province, with an entire city, a river, several museums, and multiple streets named after him today. Jonathan C. Slaght’s translation of Vladimir Arsenyev’s 1921 book Across the Ussuri Kray (Indiana University Press, 2016) is an unabridged, uncensored, detailed account of Arsenyev’s 1902 and 1906 expeditions. Augmented by several hundred annotations, two maps, and nearly forty photographs, it is available August 29, 2016, at Amazon,Barnes & Noble, Powell’s Books, and elsewhere.. Read more here.

New photographs just released from Bastak Reserve in the Russian Far East confirm that a feline Cinderella story continues to unfold. Brought into captivity as a nearly starved, 3-month old cub, the tigress that became known as Zolushka (Russian for Cinderella) flourished in a rehabilitation center designed to prepare her for life back in the wild. Without a mother (probably lost to poachers) Zolushka learned how to kill natural wild prey presented to her in the rehabilitation center, where she was kept far from people to preserve her innate fear of humans. Read more here.

The temperate rainforests of Primorye become dense and green in summer, a vastness lost on those within it. Visibility can drop to almost zero along shrub-crowded game trails, where dew-drenched grasses cling like needy toddlers and spider webs tangle in the unshaven faces of those pushing through. Animals, resting nearby in the daytime heat, crash away unseen, and a discordant symphony of birdsong pulses from the canopy. Everything is immediate and aromatic; a box packed tight with vegetation, dirt, sweat, and humidity. Not the kind of box you want to be in with a tiger. Read more here.
